Well, here it is. It looks like after 5.25 years, Bury the Survivors is done. We still love metal, we still love playing, we still love our fans, and we still love each other. Unfortunately there were a lot of proverbial straws on our camel toe's back. Between losing Kylie, playing most shows for ten or less people, and not getting asked to play a single show in almost a year, we got tired of fighting the uphill battle and decided to move on. It also doesn't help that after 46 shows, our pay averaged around 5 bucks per show. Yeah yeah, I know, it's about the music, not the money. You can only tell yourself that so many times while lugging your $3000 guitar rig down 3 flights of stairs to your van that's almost out of gas.
We were playing thrash 5 years ago when everyone wanted to kick box to a 20 minute breakdown. We looked like chumps. When the music trends finally caught up to us, there were a ton of new bands playing the same stuff we were, only in most cases better. This new flood of available metal bands made it harder than ever to get decent shows. Now when we play it, it just sounds like we're trying to be like everyone else. So it's time to move on.
There's no way in hell any of us are going to stop playing music. It's in our blood and we've been doing it for a collective fifty years or so. We decided that if we're going to play for small crowds, not sell any merch and go home with thinner wallets than we left home with, we might as well start having more fun and working less. We are still debating having a final recording session of our newest songs. I can't foresee us selling many copies since we're not playing shows, so it will probably be available for free download on MySpace and this website.
The original four members of BTS, (Andy, Kevin, Wookie, and I) have a new project underway. It's too early to talk about it but if you liked us before, you will probably like this too. When/if we get a first show together, we'd love to see some familiar faces in the crowd. If you are a friend of BTS on MySpace, don't delete us quite yet. We'll use that as an outlet to keep you posted on the new band happenings until we get a new MySpace page set up.
We'd like to thank the following people, bands, venues, etc for supporting us:
Our
parents, siblings, girlfriends, and whoever else had to hear us practice, former
members Kylie, Kevin H and Clark, Bronson for mixing our album for basically
nothing (I still owe you one!), everyone at our super-secret Sunday recording
space, former Mishap house roommates for not coming downstairs during practice wielding a
chainsaw, UAY for having us play and raising us right, Luke and Burnt Beyond
Recognition, Nate and the In the Rouge Blood/The Feeding, Sam and Grace and
Petit Mal/Kickass Tarantulas/etc, Zach Power (Acrylic Booking), Bruce McLane from Emerald City,
Matt Nasty, Jason from the Nexus, Breakdance, Lipstick Homicide, Red and the Eds, Mal Demise, Trendy Bastard, the Muscatine kids
for loving us, (I still don't think we sound like Metallica!), Uptown Bills, Kelly and everyone at the Hall Mall, Los Sobrios Emputados,
In Defence, Through Hard Times,
Jackrabbit Slim's, DRI for letting us cover their song on the 7" we never
finished, Freaklabel, Pauly from Anfang/Nancy, the kids at Revolt skatepark,
Shane and Shannon from Voodoo Tattoo (now Sideshow Tattoo), Larry Sievers, Suburban Scum, The Horde, Knuckle
Draggers Scooter
Club, and I guess the Picador/Gabes even though they hardly ever
asked us to play.
No thanks to:
That asshat in Des Moines that stole our Hall Mall show and removed us from the bill, (You still owe me a show, fucker!), the people that saw that disaster of a set at the 4th of July show at Bill's farm in '04 and wouldn't see us or book us for the next five years, (believe it or not, we did get better), and anyone who made fun of us for playing metal in 2003, then started a metal band in 2007.
We still have a lot of merch left! American Apparel shirts, CDs, stickers, etc. If you want anything, send me an email, tell me what you want, and I'll make a deal. I'm not taking this stuff to my grave.
Thanks for the support, we love all of you!
Mark
2007
9/3/07 (Mark)
I was just making a few updates to the site and decided to let you all know what's been going on. It's been a month since our last show with Kylie at the Gabes-ador, and not much has happened since. The show went awesome though! If you missed it, you're bummed. We haven't decided exactly what we're going to do to fill the hole left by Kylie. It's a big hole. A big, gaping, swollen hole. And kind of tender and sore. In the meantime, we'll continue to play as a 4-piece and see where life takes us.
As a side note, the Cross Examination show in Cedar Falls was amazing! Thanks to Matt for setting it up, thanks to Cross Examination for putting on a great show and being such cool guys. Thanks to everyone who came out on a Monday night, got naked and humped inflatable sharks in a shower of PBR and Doritos. If you want to know what I'm talking about, check out my MySpace videos.
8/3/07
Tonight is Kylie's last show with BTS. We will be thrashing with The Horde, Bonedrag, and Aseethe. BTS will have more news in the coming weeks, so check back then.
THANKS, KYLIE FOR BEING AN AWESOME DUDE AND GUITARIST!
7/05/07
We now have American Apparel sweatshop-free t-shirts! Their clothing is made in downtown LA by employees who are paid a living wage and receive health insurance and other benefits. We will no longer sell merchandise that is made in factories with unfair labor practices. The new shirts have the same logo as before, but with much better quality ink and printing. Right now we only have asphalt shirts with red and white ink, but more colors will soon follow. We are selling them for only $12, which is a steal. Check them out on the merch page! For those looking for a bargain, we will now sell all our old shirts for $5 each. We have a random selection of sizes, graphics and colors, so email us for a current list of what we have in your size. Or just come to a show, dig through our box o' crap and make us a deal.
6/24/07
BTS was asked to play a show with CROSS EXAMINATION on July 30th in Cedar Falls. This is not 100% confirmed by the rest of the band, but I'm too excited not to mention it now! C.E. are awesome revival crossover thrash from St. Louis along the lines of classic D.R.I., Suicidal Tendencies, etc. Their contemporaries are Municipal Waste and Brazil's Violator.
6/23/07
BTS hopes everyone is having a good summer. Our last show in Moline was nothing special. The venue double booked the scooter rally and a PTA dinner. Needless to say, the parents were not into us and were offended by "Not My President." Oh, boo hoo. We'll be playing next at the Picador to support Witness The Undefined's cd release (and farewell show) party.
5/14/07 (Andy)
Well, so much for all the shows we had lined up. Due to various reasons, we are down to the gig in Moline. Moline will be great so don't miss it! The demo compilation cd is done (thanks Mark) and is available now for $6. It has some of the better old recordings from 04-05 as well as two tracks from the mia 7"
4/20/07 (Andy)
Take note of the four shows we have coming up. We haven't played since January and are excited to debut some new songs. We will also have some demo cds available for cheap consisting of select recordings from 2004-2006.
4/03/07 (Mark)
Wow, almost another 2 months have passed by. The practice space is basically finished, the new songs are written and almost nailed down, and we have a couple shows coming up. Check the "shows" page for updated info. We're really excited about May 18th at the Hall Mall. It will be a bit of a flashback for any of you who were at the Voodoo Tattoo show in September of last year. In Defence from Minneapolis will be back as will Through Hard Times from Iowa City. We absolutely love both those bands and everyone in them, so definitely come out for that show, it will not be one to miss. Oh, and buy some In Defence merch while you're there, they'll be on tour and will probably need the gas money, not to mention their CD is freaking amazing.
Now for a 7" update: The mixing has been done for 6 months, the paperwork has been done for a year, and the cover art STILL isn't back from the artist. I promise the 7" will happen, with or without the pretty artwork! Maybe we'll stick the vinyl in a paper bag and write the band name in crayon...
2/12/07 (Mark)
It's been a month, so I thought you all deserved an update. We have been taking a break from playing shows to get some new songs nailed down. I think our new stuff is sounding really good, too. We're not being scared of getting a little more technical, but trying not to go overboard since our roots are still in 70s-80s punk, metal and hardcore.
We have also been hard at work remodeling our practice/recording space here at the Mishap House. Some old walls came down and some new walls went up, along with a very large pile of insulation. When all is said and done we will have a lot more elbow room, more electrical outlets, and lights controlled by one switch instead of 5 different strings scattered around the basement.
Until next time.
1/10/07 (Mark)
Thanks to everyone at the Casbah in Ottumwa. We had a few technical difficulties, but all in all it was a fun show. Five Star Fracture from Fargo ND was awesome, so if you ever get a chance to see them, definitely check them out! We're working on putting together a Saturday afternoon skate session with live music at Emerald City in Cedar Rapids as soon as they knock out a wall or two. I see no reason not to play for at least an hour since kids with skateboards aren't easily bored. After all, traveling 2 hours to play for 20 minutes gets old sometimes. We'll keep you posted on that show and anything else that comes up.
2006
12/30/06 (Andy)
Well, this will be the last update of 2006. FOUR YEARS we've been together!!! Come see us at the Casbah in Ottumwa on the 6th of January. We hope everyone had a good holiday season. Happy New Year.
Thanks to Mark for the awesome overhaul he's done for our site.
12/3/06 (Andy)
We are scheduled to play The Casbah in Ottumwa on Jan. 6, 2007. We will be unveiling a set of brand new songs, some old favorites, and one resurrected oldie. Have a great holiday season! Don't succumb to consumerism. Be nice, be sane, and enjoy the positives, however large or small, we all have in our lives.
11/26/06 (Andy)
We hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving (and Halloween). Keep checking back, as we may have a show coming up. See ya.
10/29/06 (Andy)
Here's a quick update to say that we have no shows coming up, but have been hard at work polishing up some new songs!
8/25/06 (Andy)
The show at the Hall Mall has been cancelled. Apparently, no more Metal Militia shows will be happening again. We hope to play soon in Cedar Rapids or some new venues.
7/17/06 (Mark)
Well, the big St Louis show fell through because of... you guessed it, THE COPS! I'm almost 30 and I STILL hate authority! Anyway, we now have a show at the trusty old Hall Mall on September 21st with Out For Blood and Send The Dawn, and one in the works in Ottumwa on August 5th. Check back here or on our MySpace page for more details as we learn of them. Also, thanks to Witness The Undefined for an awesome show at Uptown Bills last week, and thanks to all of you that came out to see us!
I'll leave you with a riddle: How long does it take 5 old guys with full-time jobs to put out a 7"?
Answer: 10 MONTHS AND COUNTING!
The recording has been done for a while, and it is 99.9% mixed. Any day we should get it back and send it off for pressing. Watch for it to go on sale in early 2074!
6/11/06 (Andy)
BTS is working on some new songs and resurrecting some old ones. We've got a few more shows lined up for the summer. One will be a return to Uptown Bill's with Witness the Undefined. The most exciting will possibly be in St. Louis with a slew of other metal bands at a festival! We are hoping this works out as it will be awesome and our first time playing outside of Iowa (FINALLY!!!).
5/6/06 (Andy)
Some overdue updates:
-Tonight we'll be playing at Tornadoes in Cedar Rapids. We've never been there before and it should be fun.
-The Larry Sievers benefit shows went well, raising a few hundred dollars to help him out. Thanks to Sam for setting those up!
-You might be wondering: "Where the hell is this 7" you guys talk about all the time?" Well, Bronson has been mixing it and Mark and Kylie have been in contact with him. Sounds like it may be complete really soon. The next step is to send it to the record plant.
-Some other news regarding DRI involves Spike Cassidy's diagnosis and treatment of colon cancer. DRI has cancelled their summer tour and we hope the time will allow a full recovery for Spike. If you'd like to make a donation to the Cassidy medical fund (that is handled by and goes directly to his family), click here to contribute. Thanks, everyone!
3/29/06 (Andy)
Great show last night at Emerald City! Come see us at the Hall Mall next, and soon afterwards we will be appearing for the first time at Tornadoes in Cedar Rapids.
3/2/06 (Andy)
We finally got another show next Wednesday at the Hall Mall. We might as well be the official house band there. Come see us with the ever awesome Breakdance and two more!
2/27/06 (Andy)
Another month has flown by...we swear the 7" is almost done. BTS has always taken forever to record with mixed results. The record should sound pretty good! We are still hoping to play in Cedar Rapids as we had to cancel our last scheduled appearance. We look forward to seeing all you CR metalheads soon!
1/25/06 (Andy)
BTS will not be playing at Emerald City next Saturday. Mark was given the opportunity to go to Philly for the weekend with members of Agnostic Front and Murphy's law in addition to other cool stuff. We tentatively are scheduled to play EC the 25th of March.
1/6/06 (Andy)
Look for some major overhauling of the BTS site in the next few days. I'm working on drastically decreasing the picture file sizes. Several are fixed on the main and members pages so far. See you at the Hall Mall real soon as well as the new Emerald City club in Cedar Rapids.
2005
12/27/05 (Andy)
Well, it's the end of 2005, and the third year of BTS' existence. BTS played only seven shows this year, but each was unique. Our favorites by far have been at the Hall Mall. The crowds, support, and atmosphere have been wonderful. 2006 will kick off with a return to the Hall Mall, and a venture to Cedar Rapids to play at a new all ages venue! The grand tradition of playing Mark's birthday will no doubt be continued as well. As always, please do not hesitate to contact us about playing shows. Thanks for all of your support in 2005. We'll see you very soon!
12/24/05 (Andy)
MERRY CHRISTMAS and HAPPY NEW YEAR! HAPPY HANUKKAH, HAPPY WINTER SOLSTICE, MERRY WHATEVER ELSE...
BTS is still working on finishing up the 7". We've got some bass, guitar, and vocal tracks to finish. We'll post a track as soon as it is finished. Take care and we'll see you Jan. 2006 at the Hall Mall.
May Jesus bring you all you desire this Christmas while you celebrate the birth of Santa Claus.
11/21/05 (Andy)
Saturday was an awesome show! I don't say this very often, but we seriously thrashed the shit out of the place! Thanks to Breakdance, SMG, and Modes of Pleasure for a great time. We're going to try and get one more show this year, but regardless of how that works out, we will be at the Hall Mall again in January, likely with Kickass Tarantulas, Petit Mal, and Niles Arif? (not sure of name). Special thanks to Kelly for getting the Metal Militia together and making it strong.
11/19/05 (Andy)
Tonight's the night! Get yo' buttz out to the Hall Mall. As Mark posted on myspace, we don't play too often especially with a quality line-up such as Breakdance and Sharing Mass Graves! There will be an autograph session afterwards and a raffle to win a night of love with Wookie. Only $1 a ticket!
11/04/05 (Mark)

Just thought you all might find this amusing. It is an e-mail sent to FEMA director Michael Brown's Blackberry during the chaos of Hurricane Katrina. Nevermind the people dying in the Superdome, creeping flood waters and lack of food and water. He needs to appear more hard working on TV. It is, after all, much easier than actually working. There are other messages about finding dog sitters, eating at Steak and Shake, and more about his wardrobe.
In BTS news, we're still recording for the 7" S-L-O-W-L-Y! Someday soon it will be done, I promise! I also added a few more political links to the links page. Hope to see you all at the Hall Mall on the 19th!
10/14/05 (Andy)
BTS will make our third appearance at the Hall Mall on Nov. 19th with Sharing Mass Graves and Breakdance. As always, check back for ever changing updates to the site.
Sat, October 8 (Andy)
Thanks to everyone who watched us last night, especially Kelly Kennextion, Mary, JoAnn, Bob, Collette, and the metalheads up front! We will likely be returning to the Hall each month. As of now, we will be focusing on recording for the next several Sundays. As always, check back for updates.
Tues. October 4 (Andy)
Wookie and I saw the legendary Judas Priest (with Halford) and Anthrax (with Belladonna) at the Mark in the QC Sunday night. Despite a semi-weak set list, Priest was in top form, especially for guys pushing 60! Anthrax was great as usual, with this being the 5th time I've seen them and Wook's 6th. I'm jealous cause he saw them in '90 with Slayer and Megadeth. Anyway, just thought I'd share this tidbit on two of many influences on BTS. Please see us this Friday! We've got some new thrashers to debut. Stay metal.
Thurs. September 29 (Mark)
For those of you that were planning on going to the Hall Mall show this weekend, please note it has been changed to Friday the 7th. We will have several colors of t-shirts in all sizes from YM-XL, so come out and pick one up for $8. What other band has 2 color t-shirts for $8? NONE! We can't break away from those punk rock roots. So come out next weekend and represent!
Fri. September 23 (Mark)
I just realized when I typed the date that it is my half birthday. More significantly, however, it's been exactly 2 and a half years today since Bury the Survivors' first show! We've come a long way since that night when we played 4 songs in my living room with Kevin H. on vocals.
Anyway, I came to the realization that I haven't updated the news in a super long time, so here is a rundown of the things happening. First off, as Andy mentioned, we have new shirts and will have even more at our next show. They have the red logo you see on the main page of the website with a white border, on black shirts. We will also have green shirts with purple logos, and white shirts with undecided ink colors. Expect something completely different though! In other news, I was going to wait until closer to the time, but it's pretty much a done deal, so here goes - we're finally putting out a 7"! As of now the track listing will be as follows: Not My President, Open Casket, and D.R.I.'s Suit and Tie Guy. The first two songs will be on our next full-length album whenever that may happen, but this will be the only way to get a recording of the Suit and Tie Guy cover. It's going to be a very limited pressing, somewhere under 500, on clear vinyl and with full-color artwork on the sleeve. This will also be the first recording with Kylie, so there are a million reasons to pick it up! It will probably be a couple months before it's done, so you'll have plenty of time to save up the few bucks to get one.
So, thanks to all of you for going off at our shows, leaving the nice comments for us on MySpace, and still supporting us after 2 1/2 years! We hope to see you at our upcoming shows! Keep thrashing!
Tues. September 20 (Andy)
I've made a few changes throughout the site, most notably the songs and merch pages. We have new shirts! Only $8! We'll play live soon!!!!!
Sun. September 11 (Andy)
BTS is thinking of the victims of 9-11 and their families. We also are keeping the Katrina victims in our thoughts, too.
BTS will not be playing at the Hall Mall on the 24th due to conflicting schedules. We will likely be playing there in October. Thanks for your support.
Thur. September 1 (Andy)
BTS will invade the Hall Mall again on the 24th. Details are listed on our "shows" page. We will be debuting a new song or two we've been working on for awhile. We'll keep you updated on other BTS newz.
Mon. August 8 (Andy)
The Hall Mall show on Saturday was GREAT! There was a great turnout (I believe a record was made for most money earned at Mall show) and all the bands played wonderfully. We fully intend to play there again. In other news, burythesurvivors.com is back in business and we have a new item for sale-our first dvd (and it's only $3!). Take care and keep checking back.
Fri. July 29 (Andy)
After a length of relative inactivity, BTS has scored a show at the Hall Mall on August 5th with our friends, Plagued By Saints, Wax Cannon, and Witness the Undefined (formerly BBR). Be there, foolz. F.Y.I., burythesurvivors.com will be unavailable as an address until further notice. I'm working with Yahoo to get it back and they messed up the transaction. Mishap.biz will suffice for now.
Sun. June 19 (Andy)
Come see us tomorrow at the Whoa Boat and maybe we won't be sloppy. See ya then!
Mon. June 6 (Andy)
Well, we got a very short notice show to play Gabe's with Dead to Fall. We were out of practice and it showed...oh, well. Thanks for those who rocked out up front.
Sat. June 4 (Wookie)
Not a whole lot to add, really. Just added the lyrics to Mark's new tune, 'Not My President.' Also, 'Playing God(Anatomie)' has officially become an instrumental, because after seven fucking months of dicking around trying to fit lyrics to the twisting instrumentation, all I want to do is beat my own head into the ground. Don't forget we're playing soon at the Whoa Boat in late June. Tonight at Gabe's, Andy and Kylie and Fareyd and I will be checking out Zombi, who play some kick ass splatter movie kinda music. Think an American Goblin, if you can dig that.
Sun. May 29 (Andy)
Not much to say today other than to look at the site for some updates and additions. Check us out at the Whoa Boat in June and we'll hopefully get some more shows in the meantime.
Sat. May 14 (Andy)
Check out our "shows" page. We've got some dates at Gabe's and the Whoa Boat coming up. Other than that not much news other than some plans to do some recordings this summer. See ya.
Sat. April 16 (Andy)
Hello! Wook, Kylie, Kay, Joey, and I saw Strapping Young Lad in the QC with some crappy "hardcore" bands opening on Wed. SYL was stellar of course with the drum god Gene Hoglan pounding the crowd into oblivion. Kylie, Wook, and I will be heading for Chicago tomorrow to see Overkill and scope out some metal stores, too. However, the mother of all shows will take place April 30th in Chicago when Wook, Joey, and I will bow before the might of the reunited 80s line-up of Anthrax. Well, in BTS news, it looks like we'll be playing at Kirkwood Community College next Friday. Check back for details.
Thur. April 7 (Andy)
Browse the site for some updates including a few pix of BTS at Mark's B-Day party. We'll see you live sometime soon. Take care.
Tues. March 29 (Andy)
Mark's B-Day bash went over great. Thanks to those who showed their support for us. Keep checking back for more updates soon.
Sun. March 13 (Mark)
Sorry for the huge lapse in updates. The computer had some problems, but they're all resolved now. Expect more regular updates again. The main piece of news to pass along is our 2-year anniversary show coming up on March 26th. It is at the Mishap house in conjunction with my birthday party, just as our first show was in '03. I like to keep these parties small and under control, so if you don't know us personally, write us and we'll give a few people directions. Otherwise, if you know us and know where we live and practice, stop by! Party starts around 8pm, and we'll play about 9. There are people coming from as far as Denver, so no excuses, locals! And for those of you keeping track, this will be our first performance with Kylie! Thanks for hanging in there while we fixed the computer problems, and you can probably expect an update from Andy soon. METAL!!!!!
Sun. January 16 (Andy)
Last week, our good friend Sam "Eggnog" Ward was seriously injured by an asshole drunk driver in Columbia, Missouri while on tour with The Miracles of God. His bandmate, Clayton was also injured. We want to wish them the best in their recoveries. If you wish to donate some dough to help with medical/living costs, stop by That's Rentertainment, Gabe's, G-Spot Hair Design, Record Collector, any of us in person, or through our "merch" page Paypal account.
Sat. January 8 (Andy)
BTS is beyond excited to announce the arrival of a new member-our longtime friend and producer, KYLIE B! Kylie will be playing guitar and hopefully doing some vocals, too. This is a great day in the merry land of BTS!
Sat. January 1 (Andy)
HAPPY NEW YEAR! BTS has entered their 3rd year and are looking forward to a great one. Best wishes to all our fans-we hope '05 is awesome for you as well.
2004
Tues. December 21 (Wookie/Andy)
Hey all! Just a short note to thank The Wheelers and Lawrence Cockburn for joining us at the skate park show, and to Brynn from Wheelers for letting me use her amp. As you may or may not know, Mark and I are currently plagued with malfunctioning gear. Oh, well, maybe Jesus can fit a half stack down a chimney. Hey, he supposedly turned water into wine or some such shit. Anyway, have a safe and happy holiday, and to quote Mark and Andy's old band, The Stereotypes, "Merry Fucking Christmas" from BTS. Wook out.
Thur. December 16 (Andy)
We now have a message board to replace the guestlog. The old postings have been saved under the "news" link for now. We've been getting too much porn and viagra spam links posted on the log. The message board requires logins but I think you can post as a guest, too. We hope to see you tomorrow at Revolt. Later!
Mon. December 13 (Andy)
Come see us this Friday at Revolt Skate Park! Details are posted on the "shows" page. Also, if you haven't already, check out The Kick-Ass Tarantulas the next time they play. Mark, Kevin, and I saw them last night at the Yacht Club. Sam and his gang (including the saxophonist of the Violent Femmes) are certainly something new and unique in the IC scene.
Fri. December 10 (Wookie)
I'm sure by now everybody has heard that the metal world lost another legend Wed. night in Ohio, when a gutless fuck head jumped onstage during the first song of Damageplan's set, accused Dimebag Darrell of 'breaking Pantera up' and then shot him five times at point blank range. All I can say to Dime's killer is, it's a damn good thing the cops killed you, because the crowd in the club would have, and if through some fucked miracle your ass made it out intact, there's a shit ton of metal heads in prison and you wouldn't last 30 seconds behind the walls. My thoughts and condolences go out to Vinnie, Dime's brother(I can only imagine what you're going through) and to the rest of the Abbott clan. Dime's spirit and playing will be missed, but for those whose lives he's touched, via Pantera or Damageplan, he'll live on in our hearts, memories and record collections. Maybe he's up there jamming already, with Randy Rhoads, Chuck Schuldiner, Paul Baloff, Cliff Burton and Quarthon. Rest in peace, Dime. On behalf of B.T.S., we'll see ya on the other side.
Tues. December 7 (Andy)
"i got there at the end of bury the survivors. they were very good." (from the 515crew.com message board)
Thanks for the compliment, I Like Horses!
Fri. December 3 (Andy)
We just finished playing Gabe's. Thanks to the great crowd turnout, moshing, and BBR for coming back strong and being the usual awesome guys! A loud "Get Well" goes out to the singer of In the Rogue Blood who was hospitalized earlier today. As for Burning Love Letters-enough with the emo-metal/hardcore already! Okay, we'll see all our fans later!
p.s. Thanks to Kevin H. for helping us out tonight!
Thurs. December 2 (Andy/Wookie)
Come see us tomorrow at Gabe's. We will be playing right around 6pm so don't be late! This may be our last show before the new year! We're also pumped to see Wookie's brother's band in their new formation.
Fri. November 26 (Andy)
We hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving! Tomorrow night we are playing at the Nexus as part of the Incinerator Metal Showcase. Next Friday we'll be invading Gabe's to play an early all ages show with our friends.
In addition, I would like to provide an update on some old plans. 1. BTS is no longer searching for a lead vocalist. We decided to stick with good ole Wook and Mark. The double attack of death metal/punk vocals works great for us. 2. Our plan to release a 7" will be postponed. We had a few bands tentatively willing to do a split, but they and we have little funding. We also don't have any all around satisfactory recordings for official release yet. Hopefully we'll be ready next spring before our planned tour. To assist with the tour Mark got a van with a bed. Whoo hoo!
Sat. November 20 (Wookie)
Holy shit! It's almost one in the morning as I sit here typing this, and we just got back from my personal dream gig number two, playing at the hallowed halls of 3rd Street Live (formerly Big Dog's to the old school crowd)! Andy and I have seen countless bands there over the years and to stand on the same stage that the mighty Overkill, Anthrax, Morbid Angel, etc. have played on was a rush beyond almost every imagining. The show was fairly tight, the mix ferocious, and the crowd seemed to really dig our blend of metallic mayhem. Thanks to our buds in Freak Label for getting us on the bill, as well as Hoopride, a fun bunch of guys. They're not my cup of tea personally, but I'm an old fucker and like my shit more straight up. Don't forget our show next Saturday at the Nexus, an all out metal melt down. Be there and up the horns!
Thurs. November 18 (Andy)
WOW! We just got asked last night to play at Third St. Live in Cedar Rapids. Thanks to Freaklabel for the recommendation! As you may know, Third St. (formerly Big Dogs) is well known for hosting a variety of metal acts throughout the years. I remember seeing Overkill and Top Heavy years ago with Mark and Wook as well as Anthrax. Wook has seen his fair share of metal there, too, including Testament, SYL, Dio, Morbid Angel, and Destrophy. Well, enuff bragging. Check out the shows section for details. See ya!
Fri. November 5 (Andy)
We had a good time at the Nexus tonight. Thanks to Anfang and Jason! They were pretty awesome! If only we could be half as talented as those guys. You kick ass.
Thurs. November 4 (Andy)
Well, Bush won, and fairly it seems...A sincere thanks to the massive Left wing turnout in these times of Right wing extremism. Sorry to be so bitter, but I'm angry about how the young voters failed to show up again. What does it takes to respect and use your right to vote?! On a high note, come see us tomorrow at the Nexus. See ya!
Wed. November 3 (Mark)
It looks like Bush might actually somehow win this election. Which might be a slightly unfamiliar feeling for him since he stole the last one. Anyway, one (or about 50% of the country) might ask, "how could this happen?" He lost more jobs than any other president in 75 years, his profit-motivated military operation in Iraq has cost over 1000 U.S. troops and hundreds of billions of dollars, less people than ever before have medical coverage, minimum wage is at an all time low while corporation profits are at an all time high, the gap between the lower and upper class is widening at an alarming rate, and the extreme religious right is taking over every aspect of our lives. It seems to all come down to fear. Something like 90% of Bush supporters said terrorism is the most important issue facing America today. First off, Osama bin Laden who is a complete nutjob, happens to be more truthful and intelligent than our *gulp* president. He said himself that he attacked us because of the ongoing military presence in the middle east. If we would have left, he wouldn't have retaliated (aka 9/11). So by increasing military presence over there, we are inviting MORE attacks. I know, I know, he attacked us because he hates freedom right? That is certainly what millions of Bush's campaign dollars worth of propaganda have tried to convince you of. Why didn't he attack Canada, Sweeden, or any other free country? Just as I would, he attacked those that attacked him. 9/11 was retaliation. So now what? Bin Laden said he will continue to attack us if Bush is elected, sparing the states that picked Kerry. So I hope all you gun nut republicans, sitting in your basement, shaking and clinging to your assault rifle are happy. We just elected our ticket to 4 more years of terrorist attacks. Congratu-fucking-lations! Expect terrorist attacks, more war, and plenty of new material from us.
Wed. October 27 (Andy)
The upcoming Saturday show in Muscatine has been canceled due to issues with the church venue. We hope to be playing again in November. Have a great Halloween!
Sun. October 24 (Andy)
The Nexus show went okay last night. Not our best, but certainly not the worst. Thanks to Jason at the Nexus for having us play as well as the bands. We are playing in Muscatine next Saturday so come see us then, too.
There has been a comment on our guest book stating: "nooo not upside down crosses." Hold your crack, we haven't gone satanic. Mark drew the great logo and for fun threw in the cross. We were happy with the way it looked and we're glad to finally have a semi-original logo instead of using computer fonts.
We would like to extend a special thanks to Sharon V., Fayred B., and Jay for being such kind and true supporters of BTS. Sharon photographs many of our shows while Fayred and Jay provide moral support and energy for our old asses. THANKS SO MUCH!!!!!
VOTEVOTEVOTEVOTEVOTEVOTEVOTEVOTEVOTEVOTEVOTEVOTEVOTEVOTE!!!!
We're all sick of hearing about the election but don't forgo voting! The polls are too close to ignore the importance of your vote!!!!
Sat. October 23 (Andy)
Tonight is the Nexus show in Cedar Rapids with Freaklabel, Serious Injury, and City Beautiful. It's all ages! If you've never seen us before, now is the time. We'd love to meet you!
Wed. October 13 (Andy)
Don't fo'get 'bout our Nexus appearance scheduled for the 23rd. We will be playing with Freaklabel.
In other news, DIO WAS AWESOME! I can't say enough about what a great show the Troll puts on with his back up band featuring former members of Quiet Riot, Ozzy, Warrant, and AC/DC. (FYI: Wookie and Andy actually like and listen to Dio/Sabbath/Rainbow so this show was not some joke for us although it was amusing). Anthrax dusted off some classics including Keep it in the Family and Deathrider. Fireball Ministry, while not quite our style, was still pretty good, too. They were kind of a cross between Sabbath and Motorhead.
On a side note, Christopher Reeve passed away on the 11th...I always thought this guy was pretty cool. R.I.P. Superman.
Sun. October 10 (Andy)
The Nexus has asked us to play later this month! Also, we are just about finished with our new song. Check out our links page under the "Cool Music Sites" heading for some new additions. On the songs page you will finally see links to three new songs! In other news, Wookie and Andy will be catching a rainbow this afternoon (with Kylie and Kevin H.) to Clear Lake to see the Metal Troll himself, DIO! As a bonus, the mighty Anthrax will be opening!!!!!!!!!!
p.s. We are still looking for a singer.
Sun. September 26 (Andy)
After some time of consideration, BTS has decided to look for a lead singer. If you are interested or know someone who is, please e-mail us at burythesurvivors@yahoo.com to set up an audition. As far as guidelines go, we would prefer someone 21 or older in the Iowa City/Coralville area who has a vocal range suited for the hardcore/metal genre and is NOT an emo/screamo singer or a rip-off of Phil Anselmo or Jamey Jasta. The vocalist will have the opportunity to contribute lyrically and musically (if so inclined). They must be able to practice at least twice a week and be prepared to possibly tour next summer and do some recording. Also, some experience with a previous band is a plus as well as not being an alcoholic/drug addict.
Fri. September 17 (Andy)
As usual, you will notice some minor updates throughout. BTS is enjoying some downtime but are expecting to play as soon as October. The Room 237 mp3 will be posted very soon. By the way, check out our links page for Kylie, Andy, and Wook's Live 365 radio station. It's in the early stages of development, but will be bursting with metal by the month's end!
Mon. September 6 (Andy)
Our first day of recording went well with Kylie. We should have mp3s available within a week or two. Keep checking back and for the love of God don't vote for George Bush!
(p.m. extra):
Lesser Evil is all mixed and available for listening. See our homepage or songs page to download or visit Hardcore mp3. The song is planned to be included on a forthcoming Nexus cd compilation. Thy Kingdom Gone and Room 237 will be mixed shortly. Much thanks to Kylie B!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sat. August 21 (Andy)
The show in Burlington went great! Crimson Shoreline and Bonedrag were kickin'. It was nice to play with some real metal bands with an energetic crowd. We have no new shows as of now but keep checking back. Labor Day weekend is still scheduled for recording our 7" debut. See ya.
Fri. August 13 (Andy)
We purchased www.burythesurvivors.com to help with finding our site. This address should be working by the weekend. Ken, Mark, and Andy will be at Pigstock 10 later today!
Tues. August 10 (Andy)
What an awesome evening at Gabe's! Everyone played so well and the crowd was great! Thanks to everyone who came out to see some metal!
Wed. August 4 (Andy)
BTS will not be playing at the Des Moines Crimethinc benefit. The venue gave some b.s. to Ed (a very cool guy) about being double-booked. Anyway, the event might still happen on Sunday the 8th but we will be unable to play that day. Check 515crew.com for any details to see what other bands might play if rescheduled. Also, don't fo' get to see us at Gabe's on Monday at 6pm! Bye!
Sat. July 24 (Andy)
I love being able to update the site at home! I can finally post stuff in a timely matter. Anyway, we have Labor Day weekend set to record three new songs with Kylie B. Two are for the 7" and one hopefully will be finished in time to make the upcoming Nexus compilation. Rock on!
Fri. July 23 (Andy)
Once again, we've overhauled the site. There is now an "about" page with a long winded history. Also, the "listen" link has been removed because you can click on the song you want to hear (if available) on the "songs" page. Various pictures have been added and the main page is to our satisfaction now. Jason makes anything look cool! Keep in mind our August shows!
Sat. July 17 (Andy)
Mark and Andy saw D.R.I. in Rockford (land of Cheap Trick) at the Kryptonite on Thursday night. Man, what a great band they are and have always been. They are super cool, down to earth guys and signed our cds/records and took some photos. They can be seen on our "photo" page. Words can not describe how much of an influence D.R.I. has been on Mark and Andy for over a decade. These guys have been part of the real hardcore scene (not the emo-ish Slayer/At the Gates clones of today) in the early 80s. They also led the crossover pack along with Suicidal Tendencies and Excel in the mid 80s and eventually released one of the best metal albums called "Thrash Zone." They haven't released an album since 1995, but continue to tour consistently for the fans. Thanks, Kurt, Spike, Harold, and Rob. Keep thrashin'!
Thurs. July 15 (Andy)
I ran into Corey from Prom Night Tornado yesterday. They have a short tour planned in August and have invited us to join them. A date at Gabe's is set and we are working out the dates and details of the others. We'll keep you updated as info is finalized. Keep checking back.
Tues. July 13 (Andy)
In August we have two shows scheduled. Please see the "shows" page for details on the dates in Des Moines and Burlington (our first time in both cities). Don't forget to check out the newest changes to our site from the past week especially the "members" and "merch" pages. Buy a shirt and Larry Sievers' cd!
Mon. July 5 (Andy/Mark)
As you may have noticed, we have an all new website. If you have this site bookmarked you may have to re-bookmark it. Please change any links you may have from your own website so people can still find us. We just completed our summer tour on Saturday that we kicked off on Friday. The Muscatine show went great! There was a good turn-out and some quality circle-pits. Thanks to all the kids that showed up, especially the diehard fan in the Gn'R shirt and Amber who invited us to play. The Cedar Rapids show was a lot of fun, too. It would have been awesome if anyone showed up to see it, but we had a good time anyway hanging out with the guys from Stars Are Falling. Good luck to them on the rest of their tour. No definite dates as of now, but we'll keep you posted on anything new. Later.
Mon. June 21 (Andy)
We've got a concert on the 2nd of July at the MCSA in Muscatine, IA. Come
on over and see us thrash with Law of All Ends, Trendy Bastard, and more! Other
shows are in the works but have yet to be confirmed. Also check out our
other band sites on the links page as those are usually updated more often.
This August we will be recording Room 237 and Thy Kingdom Gone with our
producer/main man Kylie B. They will be released as a split 7" with
another band hopefully by the fall. We are excited about this and will
keep you updated. Take care and always feel free to e-mail us with questions or
comments. We love to converse with the fans!
Tues. May 25 (Mark)
We made a few quick changes, we're working on some new shows for the summer
and working on new material. Keep in touch.
Sun. May 2 (Andy)
We've got three shows this month! See the "shows" section
for details. Aside from that we've been working on a few new songs.
They've been turning out to be faster and shorter than some of our older ones. I
guess our punk roots will never die. Also you can now link to Paypal from
our merch page to order stuff on your mom's credit card. We will send out
your stuff fast, none of this 4-6 week crap. We hope to see you at one of
our shows.
Sat. April 10
(Mark)
Thanks to everyone who came to the show in Muscatine on the third. It
was a great time! Our CD is finally done, so get yours for only $4 at our
shows or email us at burythesurvivors@yahoo.com. Also pick up a t-shirt
while you're at it for only $8. Later.
Tues. March 16 (Andy)
Hi! Just a quick note to mention some site updates. We have a
link to 3 songs from our cd on hxcmp3.com. Some recent pix have been
added, too. The cd should still be ready in April. Speaking of
April, you must come to Muscatine on the 3rd to see us, BBR, Trendy Bastard and
many other bands rock you to hell! Dead to Fall will not be playing as
mentioned in an earlier update. See the "shows" page for
details. Take care everyone!
Tues. March 2 (Andy)
Another month, another update...sorry about the wait. We are working
on a new site with a different program and will be able to update at any time at
the Mishap house. Our cd is 90% finished. The mixing and production
is being wrapped up. We should have the cd ready for release by the April
3rd show with Dead to Fall in Muscatine, IA. Look for a few updates
throughout the site and please come to our future shows. We are planning
to book several more in the next few months and hopefully have a mini-tour lined
up this summer. On a side note, good luck finding the new Cannibal Corpse cd
without the censored cover...anyway...stay metal thrashing mad and bonded by
blood.
Tues. February 10 (Andy)
Hello! Number one news item is that we are half way finished recording our
first cd with Kylie. We hope to have a release by March. Also, check out
our show tomorrow with Larry Sievers at Uptown Bill's. We are doing twice monthly booking for Bill's and this is the kick-off show!
We'll keep you updated on all future concerts with a variety of bands.
We made a few more site updates, including finished lyrics and a press
posting on the shows page. We hope to see you on Wednesday the 11th!
Sun. January 25
(Andy)
Hello! The UAY/Uptown Bill's benefit concert was a great success!
UAY received $150 and Bill's, $30. Thanks to everyone who came to support
the cause. Also thanks to BBR and Jack Rabbit Slim's. We are working
on setting up a few more shows in the next month or two and will keep you
updated. We are also scheduled to record with our friend Kylie B. on Feb.
7-8 and will have some mp3s and cds shortly thereafter. We also have more
of our lyrics up for your reading pleasure. Keep checking out our site as
we update at least once a week. See ya!
Sun. January 11 (Andy)
What's up? We have updated the members' pages with new profiles.
Some minor changes throughout the site have been made as well. The
next update will likely include our lyrics on the "songs" section.
We are encouraging everyone who reads our site to attend the upcoming
benefit at Uptown Bill's. Also, it is crucial that everyone continue
following daily political news. It's time to start to preparing for the
2004 elections. Take care!
Thurs. January 1 (Mark)
Happy New Year from the B.T.S. gang! Hope everyone had a safe and good
time last night. We're still working on new material, and Mark and
Wookie's vocals are working out very well. Hope to see you at our next
show at Uptown Bill's on 1-21-04 with Burnt Beyond Recognition and our friends
from Ottumwa, Jack Rabbit Slim's. In the meantime, check out the changes
we made to various spots on the site, including brand new member profiles.
2003
Fri. December 26 (Mark)
We have experienced a major change in the band. Kay is no longer singing
for us. He is still a great friend of all of ours and we wish him the best
with his techno project and anything else he chooses to do with music. Mark
and Ken will be sharing vocal duties until a permanent solution is decided. Expect to see the 4-member lineup at our next show Jan. 21st at Uptown
Bill's. Check the "shows" page for more info on that show.
Sat. December 13 (Mark)
Holy crap! It's been like a month since we updated the site! We just
played an awesome show last week with Burnt Beyond Recognition at Uptown Bills
Coffee Shop. It was a great time and BBR is a great bunch of guys with a
lot of energy. Hopefully we'll get to play with them again soon. There
hasn't been much new besides that, the weather has kinda been bumming us out and
making us lazy! We should be recording our first album in the next month or two
so start saving now so you have the 10 bucks when it hits! Later!
Tues. November 18 (Mark)
Just a quick note. The Iowa City punk CD is now available at Record
Collector or through us for 8 bucks. Check out the "merch"
section for more info.
Sat. November 8 (Mark)
Check out the "pictures" and "members" sections for some new
pictures from shows and practice. Also, any punk fans out there? "Turn
Up The Kick-Ass, Iowa City Punk 1995-1999" is finally done! It should
be available within the next week or so at area record stores or by contacting
mark@mishap.biz. It is a 72 minute, 47 track cd with a 22 page booklet
telling about all the bands on the cd. The bands are: Kingpins,
Stereotypes, Meskwaki Bingo, Mr. Blandings Dreamhouse, PMO, The Cums, The Goon
Squad, The Abortions, and Now or Never. Only 50 numbered copies exist, so
get them soon and learn the history of punk in Iowa City. Not to mention
laugh at Mark, Andy, and Kevin's old bands.
Sat. October 18 (Mark)
Well, there isn't much happening as far as shows go, but we're hard at work on a
new song. Rock on!
Tues. October 7 (Mark)
You may have noticed a new look to the website. More changes will be
happening in the next week or so. The Mishap site is redone also, so check
it out. No shows coming up, but we are working on a few more songs and
possibly recording soon. Check back soon for more updates.
Sun. September 28 (Mark)
Just a note to check out mishap.biz for info about the Iowa City skateboard
contest. It is on October 5th and Mishap will be there with prizes and
giveaways. So if you skate or just think skater boys are hot, stop by.
Mon. September 22 (Mark)
Hello everyone. For those who don't know, we played in Ottumwa on
Saturday. Sorry we didn't let you know ahead of time, but it wasn't a
definite until the last minute. Thanks to all the bands that played and
the nice people skating, biking, and watching. It was a lot of fun! No
other definite shows in the future. Check back because we may be playing
in a couple weeks at a big party near Cedar Rapids. Later.
Mon. September 15 (Mark)
Another death!!! What is up with all the death?! Johnny Cash, you
will be missed! Last night was the show at Gabe's. We'd like to thank
Breakdance and Hulk Smash for the show, it was a great time. We may be
playing this Saturday in Ottumwa, but it's still up in the air. When we
know something definite, we'll post it here.
Thurs. September 4 (Mark)
What's up. Fortunately I have no deaths to report this week, except
Charles Bronson I think. (The guy, not the band.) We just played the
Reverb in Cedar Falls on Tuesday night, and It went okay. The Organ rules.
I know they were not happy with their performance or the money situation,
but we thought they put on a good show and look forward to seeing, maybe playing
with them again! Don't forget the Gabe's show on the 14th with Breakdance
and Hulk Smash.
Mon. August 25 (Mark)
A lot has happened in the past few weeks. We have a show at Gabe's on
September 14th with Breakdance from Iowa City and Hulk Smash. We are also
trying to record a new demo with our new songs, but it's taking longer than
expected due to bad recording equipment and busy schedules. "I love
Iowa City" shirts are in! We'll be selling them at our shows, so see
them there or at mishap.biz. Lastly, we mourn the loss of our friend, Matt
Davis. He was a member of Ten Grand (formerly Vida Blue), Only Ten Between
Us, and a multitude of other bands. He was a brilliant musician and an
amazing person. Our deepest sympathies go out to his family. And
for those of you that haven't heard yet, Wesley Willis passed away several days
ago. His head-butts will be missed by all. Check out the Alternative
Tentacles site for all the details. Hopefully I'll have better news next
time. See you at the shows!
Wed. August 6 (Mark)
We are now on MP3.com! Go to their site and search for Bury the Survivors
or go to the listen portion of this website for a link. We have a show
coming up on Sept. 2nd at the Reverb in Cedar Falls, IA. The show is at 10
PM and it is free for anyone over 21, just 2 bucks otherwise. Organ will
be headlining and a local punk band will be opening. Three bands and a lot
of fun for free! We will also have some demo CDs with us and if you ask
really nice we may just give you one. See you in the pit! (Sorry I stole
that from DRI.)
July 5th, 2003 (Andy)
